Level 2 Smart Chargers: Smart charging units communicate with your electricity provider and can be programmed to charge during off-peak hours when electricity rates are lowest. In markets with time-of-use pricing, smart charging can reduce annual charging costs by 30 to 50% compared to unmanaged charging.
Installation Costs
Level 2 EVSE units range from $200 to $800 for the hardware. Installation by a licensed electrician typically adds $300 to $1,000 depending on panel capacity, distance from the panel to the garage, and local labor rates. Total installed cost: $500 to $1,800 in most markets.
Many countries and municipalities offer incentives that offset installation costs. In the United States, the federal EV charger tax credit covers 30% of installation costs up to $1,000. Utility companies in many regions also offer rebates ranging from $100 to $500.

Before installing Level 2 charging, verify your electrical panel has capacity for an additional 40 to 50-amp circuit.
