Facial symmetry has fascinated scientists, artists, and psychologists for centuries. Now, with on-device AI, measuring it has become instant and accessible.
What Is Facial Symmetry?
Perfect symmetry means both halves of your face are mirror images. In practice, no human face is perfectly symmetrical — and that's completely normal. Research suggests that near-symmetry is often perceived as attractive, but slight asymmetries make faces look natural and human.
FaceMetric AI doesn't judge beauty — it maps proportions. Using Apple's Vision framework and a custom analysis layer, the app measures distances between 76 facial landmarks: the width of your eyes, the distance between brow ridges, jaw alignment, and more.
The Golden Ratio and Facial Proportions
One metric FaceMetric analyzes is the golden ratio (φ ≈ 1.618), a proportion found throughout nature. Applied to faces, researchers have studied whether certain facial relationships approximate this ratio — for example, the distance from the hairline to the chin versus the width at the cheekbones.
FaceMetric does not claim that higher symmetry scores mean a "better" face. The app is a measurement tool, not a judgment system. Use it the same way you'd use a body composition scale: as data, not a verdict.
How the Analysis Works
- Landmark detection: Apple's Vision framework identifies 76 key points on your face
- Distance mapping: Custom algorithms calculate distances and ratios between those points
- Symmetry score: Left-right differences are averaged into a symmetry percentage
- Proportion report: Key ratios are compared against research-derived reference ranges
Privacy First
All analysis runs entirely on your device. Photos are never uploaded to any server. The processing happens in milliseconds using Apple's Neural Engine — no cloud, no storage, no data sharing.
Who Uses FaceMetric?
The app has found audiences across several groups: people tracking changes in their appearance over time, photographers studying composition, and individuals simply curious about how facial proportions work. It's a tool for the analytically curious.
